Brilliant. It becomes clearer why the translator, David Hinton, emphasizes that the roots of Ch’an lie in the centuries-old native tradition of Daoism prior to the transmission of Buddhism into China. He views Ch’an as essentially Daoist and less Buddhist (only the adoption of dhyana meditation as a means for direct realization). I think that the notion of Xuanxue as a sense of the mysterious is the ground of Daoist cosmology/ontology, what the early Ch’an tradition calls Source-Ancestral (https://substack.com/@quantumfieldbasedmedicine/note/c-317445062?r=vfrlb&utm_source=notes-share-action&utm_medium=web).
