How China Lives with Allergies
Cold, Heat, and the Early Days of a Billion-Yuan Allergy Economy
One of my friends spent most of her twenties thinking she just “didn’t do well with flour.”
Whenever she ate a big bowl of noodles or a few slices of bread, the same pattern appeared: heavy stomach, cramps, brain fog, bad mood by late afternoon. Her family said “面食不消化”, wheat was just hard on her stomach. A doctor told her she had a “weak spleen and stomach” and should avoid raw and cold foods.
Years later, tests in a allgery clinic gave her a phrase she had never heard in Chinese: wheat allergy. All those vague explanations, 体质不好 (bad constitution), 受凉了 (caught a chill), 吃多了不消化 (overate), collapsed into something very simple: her immune system was reacting abnormally to proteins in wheat. Food wasn’t just “hard to digest”; it was a trigger.
Across China, bodies are reacting like this every day. Children break out in rashes after shrimp; office workers sneeze through spring because of pollen; toddlers wheeze in new apartments full of renovation fumes. Yet in daily language, few people call these reactions “allergies.” They are more often “上火” (too much internal heat), “受凉” (caught a chill), “最近状态不好” (just not in a good form lately).
China has quietly entered the global “age of allergies” without fully adopting the language, rules, and products that usually come with it. The gap between allergic bodies and a society that barely speaks “allergy” is exactly where a new industry is now starting to form.
Cold, Heat, and the Missing Vocabulary
In English, allergy is part of everyday grammar.
A child with eczema is sent to a dermatologist or allergist. A colleague who says “I’m allergic to nuts” is taken seriously; school lunches and airline meals are reorganized around that sentence. There are clear categories: “food allergy,” “intolerance,” “anaphylaxis,” “gluten-free,” “nut-free.”
In China, similar reactions are routed through another set of words: A baby with red cheeks is “上火了” or “胃火大”, too much internal “heat.” A teenager who coughs after hotpot is told her throat is weak, maybe “上火加受凉.” Adults who crash after wheat or milk are labeled “脾胃虚” or “肠胃不好,” not “wheat-allergic” or “lactose-intolerant.”
These explanations are not random. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a full theory of the body: cold vs heat, dryness vs dampness, strength vs deficiency. Western immunology talks about IgE, barrier dysfunction, immune tolerance. Urban Chinese live in a hybrid zone: Western-style lab results, interpreted back to them in TCM language.
The problem is not that one side is “wrong,” but that the translation layer is missing. There is no widely shared way, to say: “My immune system overreacts to specific proteins. I need my environment and my food to acknowledge that.”
So the burden stays personal and vague: “我体质差一点,你们随意就好”—I’m just weaker; you all go ahead.
Allergies Are Rising
Scientifically, China is not spared from allergies. Major cities are catching up with global trends: more asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and food allergies, especially among children and urban residents.
What differs is which foods dominate the story. Across much of Asia, shellfish, fish, eggs, and milk are leading culprits. Peanuts and tree nuts, the main villains of Western allergy narratives, are much less central. In China, shrimp and crab often trigger the most dramatic reactions; peanut allergy exists, but still appears far less frequently than in the U.S. or Europe.
That difference matters. It means China cannot simply import Western allergy infrastructure, labels, school rules, product lines, without adapting it. And for a long time, Chinese bodies were reacting in ways that neither Western allergy culture nor domestic language fully named.
Why Peanut Allergy Seems to Disappear in China
Foreign residents sometimes tell a strange story: they arrive in Beijing or Shanghai with a history of mild peanut allergy, braced for danger, then realize they’re surrounded by peanuts: cold dishes, snacks, gongbao chicken, and yet their reactions seem less severe.
